Neti. Video how-to demonstration

What is Jala Neti?

- It literally means nasal cleansing with water (in Sanskrit). In Yoga it is one of the simplest kriyas. It is also a very useful one. (Kriyas are Yogic purification practices.) Jala Neti is for irrigating and cleansing nasal passages.

Salty water nasal irrigation

- is known and used for a long time in Western medicine. It's well known, well studied and extremely simple practice. In some cases it's a preferred solution (when patient is very young or for that or another reason antibiotics are not allowed). In fact, this technique was "re-discovered" by Western medicine. It is used for hundreds (thousands?) of years by people in India (and other parts of South Asia) as a routine cleansing practice in the morning together with brushing teeth.

For Yoga, Pranayama

Yogis use the practice on a regular basis as pranayama (breathing techniques) are mostly performed through the nose. Cleansing nostrils beforehand therefore is recommended and very helpful to breath easier, deeper.

In the evening...

At work, during the day in modern cities you breath in dusty, not very clean environment. You communicate with people who may have air-born deceases (simple cold for example). - You use crowded public transport, etc. You can reduce chances to get deceases significantly, and simply make your breath easier by practicing Jala Neti regularly.
Adding Yoga, asana and pranayama practice on top of using kriyas - would help even more. ;-)
Try it yourself - it very simple. And immediately after the first-second time you will feel difference in breathing.
Note: modern medicine doesn't have any record of negative side effects of this practice. Sure, if you are still in doubt - please consult your doctor first. But pouring a bit salty water through your nostrils is more or less the same and making a deep in sea waters. You probably did it hundreds of times by now.

Video how-to demonstration. Neti pot salt

It's extremely simple and nothing to be afraid of: a slightly salted water poured through your nostrils. If it occasionally gets it into your mouse - you spit it out. If it's to salty you may feel a bit unpleasant sensations or if it's far from enough salty - you may sneeze and adjust next time amount of salt. It's more or less 1/3-1/2 of a tea spoon of sea salt.
