Meditation Techniques

There are many meditation techniques. I will describe below the simplest, first-step meditation. It is available to everybody! You can practice it even if you don't practice Yoga. You may practice it no matter what culture or religion you belong to (if you do). And this meditation technique doesn't assume any additional knowledge. (I will add more on meditation, some advanced knowledge and techniques as we go.)

Meditation instruction

Here it is in 7 words: sit straight, observe your body and breath. Simple enough for you to try? - So, try it!

More details?

In the following article I describe meditation instruction tips: how to sit, breath, where to look, when to do it, etc. Here is the link:

How-to. Process

  • Keep your mind occupied with observation of your breath and your body.
  • If your mind wonders away - as soon as your notice it - stop developing the wondered away thought. And then gently and patiently again and again bring your mind to your body and your breath. It's natural for your mind to think, to wonder away. Don't get upset, go on instead! If your mind insists to think through some work-related task or something else - promise it to think the problem through after your 5-minutes sitting. Sure the latter proposal may sound a bit silly, but it works!
  • To make it easier in the beginning - don't just "abstractly" observe the "whole" your body and your breath. - Instead connect to every part of your body, one after another, in turn. Start with your toes, go through your body paying attention to the smallest details and finish with crown of your head. Task for now is to be aware, to be mindful and conscious about every part of your body. See how it feels, what other parts of your body it touches, how clothes touching your body (softly? warmly?). - Theses are just couple of examples. There are hundreds of small details, sensations, processes.
  • Observe also your breath in details: from sensations in your nostrils to expansion/collapse of your chest and abdomen.
  • You will be amazed how many things, feelings, sensations there - you will never get bored.
  • While walking with your mind through your body - if you notice any (muscle) tension, try to consciously release it. Relax your body a bit more.

Start with these simple meditation techniques. Commit yourself for a few weeks. You know it well: whatever important thing there is in your life, it is there, with you, because you invest your time and energy. Meditation is no different. And after some time you will have your results. You will be amazed! And from then on you will have your personal motivation.
